Scholarships
In order to refrain from the traditional roles played by women in this society, we have created a scholarship fund that encourages excellent academics and empowerment among women in developing countries.
Our scholarship provides funding for girls who have been invited to college or university and have committed to a full 4 year degree. The steps to get here have been more than challenging for them, therefore we will provide the resources to fulfill their dreams, create a bright future, and reach their full potential. Sarah Obama, the 88-year-old grandmother of US President Barack Obama, is looking after 80 orphans and a dozen widows. The children, aged 4 to 18, are from neighboring places, most of them lost their parents to HIV/AIDS.
Kenyan schools are riddled with corruption, serving the wealthy who are able to manipulate the playing field of the youths of Kenya.
Already, the majority of students are orphans living in impoverished households. There access to school supplies and books is not acceptable as children share textbooks and materials are rationed by school administration. The costs of primary and secondary school alone is almost 100% of their parents annual income. School is a luxury throughout Kenya, although after teaching in a ‘rift valley’ school with no electricity, windows, doors, or extra curricular activities – I would say it is anything but luxurious.
Geography is another major factor hindering their success, as student in schools outside of city lines are deemed as receiving an inferior education with a less likelihood of being accepted into high school, college, or university. With class sizes of 50+ and all taught in their second language (first being Swahili, second is English), about 85 percent of children attend primary school, 24 percent of children attend secondary school, and 2 percent attend higher institutions.
Without a high school diploma, these 16 year old are forced to commit to a trade, most being in the agriculture industry that is dependant on weather for stable below average income. Another option is becoming a oppressed housewife in a culture that accepts abuse, female mutilation, gender inequality, and is unaware of the need for family planning. Education is their one chance to rise above the generation before them and create a career.
